Abstract

The marine angiosperm Thalassia testudinum, commonly known as turtle grass, is a source for obtaining an extract from the leaves of the species. The extract is rich in phenolic compounds, and within these, the most abundant metabolite is thalassiolin B, a glycosylated flavone with bioactive properties. The present work proposes the development of a gel combining T. testudinum extract and propoline tincture. For this purpose, the main quality control parameters of T. testudinum extract and propoline tincture were determined. In the study, the concentrations of polyphenols, flavonoids, and the antioxidant activity were determined by the DPPH method. Also, the designed formulation was evaluated for physicochemical and technological parameters, and microbiological control was performed. In general, the parameters analyzed were in correspondence with the quality specifications previously established for the extract, the tincture, and the formulation. The results justify the feasibility of using the mixture of T. testudinum extract and propoline tincture as an alternative for use in phytocosmetics.
